Litter, as misplaced trash and as solid waste, affects the appearance of South Carolina and has a significant environmental and economic impact on our state. PalmettoPride, in partnership with the Commission on National and Community Service at the South Carolina Department of Education, has sponsored the development of this curriculum resource for public school teachers from kindergarten through grade twelve. Recognizing the central role that education plays in the eradication of the state’s litter problem, PalmettoPride is working to instill in students a keen awareness of the problem and a personal interest in the creation and implementation of viable ways of addressing it.
Keeping South Carolina Clean and Beautiful: A Curriculum Resource takes the anti-litter initiative to another level by tying service-learning litter-reduction initiatives to the existing grade-level academic achievement standards. The lessons outlined in this document actively engage students in learning about the environment while giving them the understanding that they themselves are responsible for protecting and preserving that environment. The creation of these lessons was pursued independently with guidance and support from staff members of the Commission on National and Community Service as well as editorial assistance from the State Department of Education.
How to Use the Curriculum
PalmettoPride, in partnership with the Department of Education, recognized the role education could play in eradicating the state’s litter problem. The response was to develop Keeping South Carolina Clean and Beautiful a curriculum resource for grades K-12 that would increase the awareness of the problem, while providing students with ways to be part of the solution.
Developed by teachers for teachers, this new anti-litter curriculum is now available to teachers around the state in the form of an interactive CD. This tool enables teachers to easily search and access lessons either by grade level or key word. All lessons and activities are tied to the South Carolina Curriculum Standards in science, health and social studies across all grade levels. A unique feature of the curriculum is that each lesson also offers service-learning litter reduction initiatives that take students beyond the classroom instilling the idea that they are responsible for protecting and preserving the world around them.
