PalmettoPride offers a number of educational programs to engage students in helping keep our state clean and teaching them how they can be part of the solution.
PalmettoPride, along with the Columbia Marionette Theatre, presents Litter Trashes Everyone – a twenty minute educational performance featuring marionettes and hand puppets that conveys the message that every citizen has a responsibility to help keep South Carolina beautiful. The free puppet show is available to all elementary schools in South Carolina and targets children in grades K-5. To book a show at your school, please contact John Scollon by emailing puppetgnomes@msn.com or calling 803.252.7366.
The art contest is an opportunity for K-5th grade students to learn about their environment and showcase their artistic talents. Participation varies by each school, the whole school can complete the art project or even just one art class. Each participating elementary school submits one entry to represent the school and the entries are divided into four regions, Lowcountry, Midlands, Pee Dee and Upstate. The top five finalist represent the four regional winners and the state winner.
Litter-Free Games is an opportunity for clubs and organizations at the high school level to make their athletic events litter-free, while gaining a chance to earn money for their organization.
Each participating high school will receive free banners to promote their school’s event along with litter bags to hand out and trash bags to help with the cleanup. The goal of this program is to encourage fans to discard of their waste properly and provide leadership skills for the students organizing the event.
Calling all aspiring writers!
PalmettoPride hosts an annual children’s book contest every Fall. You write the story and we will publish the pages, then pass out the masterpiece to every elementary school in South Carolina during the school year.
Support literacy while forging partnerships with law enforcement and students to create positive interactions with youth. We work with South Carolina law enforcement by providing FREE educational books from our litter-free library to share with young people in the community.
Louie the Lion is PalmettoPride’s mascot serving as an ambassador to children of all ages. His goal is to turn litterbugs into clean freaks, and to help kids take “pride” in their beautiful state.
Louie was born in 2002 and is an avid believer in educating South Carolina children on the importance of keeping their state clean. Louie is available to schools and festivals across the state. If you are interested in having Louie perform at your event, email jberry@palmettopride.org.
