CLEMSON UNIVERSITY AND PALMETTOPRIDE PARTNER FOR CAMPUS PRIDE
A Campus-wide Anti-Litter Campaign Kicks Off This Fall Columbia, SC – Solid Green: Keep Clemson Clean, a community-wide anti-litter program, will kick off August 21 at the Welcome Back Festival with a proclamation by President James Barker and Mayor Larry Abernathy. Solid Green aims to promote a litter-free campus, extending into the town of Clemson, by coordinating and sponsoring activities and events that further Clemson's commitment to the environment and sustainability. Solid Green is the first comprehensive campus-wide anti-litter program in South Carolina. It will be used by PalmettoPride as a model for other colleges and universities in the state. The Solid Green committee is special in that it is composed of Clemson faculty and staff, the City of Clemson, students from Students for Environmental Awareness and PalmettoPride. “Solid Green is an exciting endeavor for us. This program encompasses our four-pronged approach to litter eradication,” said Senator David L. Thomas, chairman of PalmettoPride. “It is exciting to see the university and students embrace an anti-litter mentality, increases pride not only on campus but all over the town.” The Clemson Litter Task Force, comprised of Clemson faculty and staff, has created a campaign aimed at bringing awareness to litter issues on and around campus. Although school officials recognize that Clemson does not have a significant litter problem, the campaign will be one geared toward educating students about the environment and litter and increase pride among students to practice a litter-free lifestyle. “This is a great opportunity to strengthen our education tract at PalmettoPride,” said Sarah Robinson, Community Outreach Coordinator. “It's inspiring to see great programs from the elementary age through college age establish a respect for our environment.” One major goal of the campaign is to curb cigarette butt litter on campus and in-town. Using the Keep America Beautiful, Inc. Guide to Cigarette Litter Prevention, Solid Green will work towards establishing permanent ash receptacles that will help to change the behavior that creates the litter. Other components of the program will be banners, campus cleanups, a media campaign and special events. PalmettoPride, your anti-litter organization, is leading the effort to make the state litter-free by unifying citizens, state agencies, law enforcement, the private sector, statewide media, local organizations and Keep South Carolina Beautiful and its local affiliates.
