Grab A Bag SC Returns When Community Spirit is Needed Most

Lt. Gov. Evette Kicks Off the 2020 Cleanup Campaign

Grab a bag, rally your friends and family, put on your safety gear and head outside for a chance to enjoy the outdoors while making a difference.

Show pride by doing something good for yourself and your community.

Columbia, SC (October 19, 2020) – Today, Lt. Gov. Evette kicked off Grab A Bag SC 2020 at Clemson University with the help of the Solid Green Club during a press conference, followed by a litter pickup around campus. This statewide initiative is a safe litter pickup event that encourages South Carolinians to help clean up litter, one bag at a time.

“Getting outside and doing something for our community can make a tremendous impact on more than just our neighbors,” said Lt. Governor Pamela Evette. “We want to encourage families and businesses to make it a part of their activities.”

Rounding out speakers at today’s event include Sen. Thomas Alexander, Rep. David Hiott, Andy Leaphart with SCDOT, Sarah Lyles with PalmettoPride and student Marcus Curry with Clemson’s Office of Sustainability.

“We are excited to be hosting Lt. Governor Evette as part of our annual Solid Green Day. ‘Grab A Bag SC’, ‘Solid Green’ and ‘PalmettoPride’ are synonymous with one other as they bring to focus the beauty of South Carolina and Clemson University by maintaining and keeping our great state litter-free,” said Dave VanDeventer, Solid Green Committee Chair.

In 2019, participants of GABSC, including SCDOT with their Fall Cleanup, picked up more than 116 tons of litter from our roadways.

Litter pickup events are a great way for people to safely enjoy the outdoors while doing something good for the environment. When following CDC guidelines for social distancing, picking up litter in your community can be a purposeful way to take care of your well-being but still give back.

“Today’s event was meaningful to us because Clemson reached out to hold a cleanup for Solid Green Day,” said Sarah Lyles, Executive Director for PalmettoPride. “We were a part of the founding of Solid Green and worked together on recycling at the stadium and other projects. They encourage their students to engage in environmental and quality of life activities.”

Littering is a global issue. It is a cultural by-product of a disposable society. Event organizers are asking for businesses and economic development leaders to lead by example and make litter prevention a part of state improvement conversations.
